Cancer Treatment Is Now Available

JD Theis

Cancer is one of the most dreaded ailments and it takes many humans by surprise. Healthy human beings are often diagnosed with cancer for unexplained reasons. However, some factors have been found that are responsible. There is a general misconception cancer is incurable. If detected in the early to middle level stages, some forms of cancer can be cured. However, if the cancerous growth has reached the final stage, there is no cure. Cancer treatment and cancer support has evolved into a super specialty area. A number of hospitals and research institutions are now involved in cancer support.

Cancer has a social stigma attached to it whereby people often come to the conclusion that it is not curable. On the contrary, cures are now available. There are various kinds of the disease. These include brain cancer or tumors, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, blood cancer, intestinal cancer, breast cancer and skin cancer. There are more categories that hit the internal organs. Extensive research is being carried out by the medical institutions to find early intervention measures that will cure this ailment.

Various therapies and treatments have evolved and been standardized by medical institutions. These therapies have been found to be successful in cancer treatment and support. Treating cancer successfully often involves either surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, chemical therapy and/or medicinal therapy. Some people also follow alternative medicine therapy. Surgery is used in extreme cases wherein the cancerous growth and cells are removed by operating. This has been known to save lives at times. However, surgery is risky.

Chemotherapy for cancer treatment refers to using a variety of chemicals to kill the cancerous cells. However, the body has to be tested against various allergies before this treatment can take place. If the patient responds well to chemotherapy, it should be continued. However, if the patient responds poorly chemotherapy should be dropped. Only certain categories of cancer can be treated with this therapy. For example, in the case of blood cancer, chemotherapy may not have the desired effect. Radiation therapy refers to exposing the cancerous cells to radiation for elimination. This type of cancer treatment is found to be the most successful.

Exercise Before Meal May Keep You Heart Healthy!

by Ng Peng Hock

There is no question that exercise is always part of a heart-healthy lifestyle. But when is the best time to exercise? Some may prefer to exercise early in the morning before going to work while some may want to do it after work. Yet others may exercise during lunch break which is the only time slot that they will probably have because of their busy work schedule.

After reading this article, perhaps you may want to exercise before meal.

A study suggested that taking a long walk before a fatty meal can reduce the effects of high fat intake on blood vessel function. Eating food high in fats transiently increase fat and triglycerides levels of the blood. A recent research showed that a rich meal could temporarily impair the function of the endothelium (inner lining of blood vessels).

Another study reported that moderate exercise could blunt these effects in both thin and obese middle-aged men. In this study, 20 men ate a rich meal including whipping cream, chocolate and a whopping 80 g of fat under different conditions. In one condition, the men walked 90 minutes on the treadmill the day before meal. In another, there was no exercise.

Researchers found that the men’s post-meal triglycerides levels rose to lesser degree when they exercised before the meal. Moreover, better blood vessel function was found as compared with that with no exercise. Researchers could not clearly figure out how pre-meal exercise could counter the effects of fatty meal. However, they suggested that activity may help lowering blood fat levels, giving less opportunity to fat particles to interact with the blood vessel walls.

The duration of exercise need not be very long. The researchers further pointed out that shorter exercise sessions might also be helpful for the blood vessel function. It was previously found that 30 minutes of activity could lower post-meal blood fat levels.

Exercise can lower the risk of developing heart disease as well as other diseases. It is a healthy lifestyle that should not be ignored. If time permitted (or rather you should force yourself to squeeze some time out of your “busy schedule”), take up a simple program: walk for 3 km or 5000 steps per day, at least 5 times a week. And if you do believe the findings from the above studies, schedule it before meal.

Based on my personal experience, once you work through the second week, it will be hard for you not to follow.

Exercises That Can Be Done Anytime Anywhere

by Ng Peng Hock

Exercise is definitely good for me but unfortunately, I am so tired at the end of day and I really don’t have time for it! Sound familiar. Lack of time, too tired, and too lazy are commonly used by us as excuses to escape from doing some exercises. But all of us are aware that exercise is part of a healthy lifestyle besides a balance and healthy diet that will reduce the risk of heart disease and many other conditions.
Perhaps, we are always preconceived with ideas that exercises must be in the form of jogging, brisk walking and gym workouts. If you really do not have extra time to exercise, you could still burn a few calories, tone up your flabby arms, firm up your tummy while watching TV, on your way to work, and at work. Does this make exercising sound more appealing? Here are some tips from people like personal trainer or exercise physiologist to help you create an exercise regimen that is fun, easy and achievable in your daily life.

Circuit Training At HomeCircuit training involves doing a mix of aerobic, resistance and flexibility exercises in quick succession to work the various muscle groups. It helps to improve your muscles and stretches them after a bout of exercise. There are modified exercises we can do at home.

For cardiovascular benefits, you can try vacuuming, or dancing in invigorating music. Or you can stimulate a boxing match by wrapping towels around your fists, and punching into a pillow held up by a partner.

For strength training or resistance exercises, fill up your water bottle with water or sand and do some bicep or tricep curls while watching television. Or, you can sit down and clamp a pillow between your ankles, lifting it up and down. This exercise is good for abdominal training.

To stretch your muscles, lie down in front of television, if you cannot miss the program you watch, with one leg straight and the other leg bent. Draw the knee of the bent leg close to your chest with the help of a towel wrapped around the calves. This is good for stretching your hamstrings.

Commuting to Work and at HomeLearn to activate your abdominals through sit-ups and crunches, so when you are on the trains or buses, you can lightly contract your abdominal muscles. The correct way is the reflex action of tightening your midsection when someone is about to punch you in the stomach.

Working with ComputerWhen you are working on the computer, twist your trunk to the sides slowly for eight to ten times. This movement increases mobility in your oblique, or side abdominal muscles.

DrivingWhen driving, keep the shoulder relaxed and at the same time, do deep abdominal breathing. With each exhalation, contract the abdominal muscles. This exercise prevents tight shoulders and a stiff neck.

If you force yourself doing something you don’t enjoy, you will probably end up not doing it again. So pick up those exercises you feel fun or easy and start doing them.

How to Get Fit and Healthy with Aerobic

by Vita V.

There are all types of gizmos for aerobic activity, and if you are new to the wonderful world of exercise, it can be hard for you to sort through it all.

These aerobic activity gadgets range from simple steppers, or jump ropes, to exotic machines whose function is almost impossible to sort out. The reason for all of these aerobic exercise toys is not because they are necessary, or even always useful for your exercise plan, but simply because of money. The fact is that, with the popularity of aerobic exercise, it is inevitable that people will market new fads and products that claim to make it easier, more effective, and more fun all at the same time, but all of that is nonsense. The important thing in aerobic activity is to elevate your heart rate for a sustained period of time. How you do that is entirely up to you. As long as you are exercising, you can go without the toys. That is, unless you like them in which case, I say go for it.

Some of the best forms of aerobic activity are the traditional sports. If you get together and play basketball twice a week with friends, this alone might be enough to keep you fit and healthy. The important thing is to get some kind of aerobic activity, and to make it something that you enjoy enough to keep with it. Personally, my favorite aerobic activity is one that quite a few experts have agreed is one of the most healthy forms of exercise workouts: I love swimming. The advantage of swimming is that it works the whole body at once. Most exercises, such as running or soccer, only work the legs, or at most only partially work the upper body, but when you swim there is no part of you that is not getting some kind of a workout. This is great for you, and in addition, there is no impact. Running will wear out your knees, as will many other of the popular aerobic activities, but swimming does not compress the joints, so there is no compromise to the health benefits that it holds. I love this aerobic activity, but it might not be the right one for you. The best advice I have is to join a gym for a month. This will let you try out lots of different aerobic exercises and find out which ones you like.

Coffee May Reduce Liver Cancer Risk

By EMMANUEL CHAVEZ

March 31, 2007, Milan — A recent study conducted by the researchers of Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche Mario Negri (IRFMN) in Milan, Italy showed that drinking coffee may help reduce the risk of liver cancer. Led by Francesca Bravi, the team combined all published data to find the link between coffee drinking and hepatocellar carcinoma (HCC). HCC is a primary cancer of the liver. Liver cancer is the third largest cause of cancer deaths around the world, just behind lung and stomach cancer. At least 11 studies that were conducted in southern Europe and Japan were the foundation of the IRFMN study.

The IRFMN study was a meta-analysis of published studies on HCC that included how much coffee patients had consumed. Researchers combined all published data to obtain an overall quantitative estimate of the association between coffee consumption and HCC development.

The figures showed that coffee drinkers have at least 41 percent reduction of HCC risk compared to those who never consumed coffee. The beneficial effects of coffee consumption were highly progressive in studies that were done in southern Europe, widely drank, and from Japan, where coffee drinking is less frequent, and in subjects with chronic liver diseases. Animal and laboratory studies have shown that some compounds in coffee may act as blocking agents that work by reacting with enzymes involved in carcinogenic detoxification. Caffeine is a component of coffee that has been shown to give beneficial effects on the liver enzymes and other enzymes of the body. Coffee consumption has also been linked to reduced risks of liver diseases and cirrhosis, both of which can lead to liver cancer.

Separate studies also show that caffeine may aggravate the symptoms of menopause or intensify the effects of certain antibiotics. On the other hand, heavy caffeine consumption may cause miscarriage. Other animal studies show that skin cream added with caffeine may lower the risk of skin cancer in mice.

While the study found a statistically significant relationship between drinking coffee and having less liver cancer, the authors note that it needs to be repeated in other groups. The authors note that despite the consistency of the results of the study, it is difficult to derive causal collaboration based on the observational studies alone. It may be that patients with digestive tract diseases, including liver disorders, naturally reduce their coffee consumption, even though avoidance of coffee is not routinely recommended.

While the study found a statistically significant relationship between drinking coffee and having less liver cancer, the authors note that it needs to be repeated in other groups to be more concrete.

The IRFMN researchers note that the perception of coffee consumption was solely based on patients’ reporting, although the recollection of coffee drinking has been shown to be accurate. Factors like hepatitis B and C, cirrhosis, social class indictors, alcohol use, and smoking suggests that these factors did not influence the results of the studies.

The results from this research may provide some evidence of a link between coffee consumption and liver cancer. However, the interpretation of this research remains unclear because of lack of long-term evaluation of the results of the said study.

A Healthier Life Through Diabetes Resource And Information Sites

By Chris Robertson

If you or someone close to you suffers from diabetes, you know what a life-altering condition it is. Diabetes - the inability of the metabolism to generate the insulin necessary to properly process blood sugar-affects millions of people in the United States alone. If properly diagnosed, diabetes in and by itself is not a fatal condition. However, keeping it under control is essential and that requires proper treatment and constant monitoring. And the more you know about the disease the better your chances of being able to live a normal life with diabetes.

There are three forms of diabetes, two of them chronic and one temporary. The chronic ones are Type 1 diabetes where the body simply does not produce insulin (a hormone that causes cells to store glucose), and Type 2 where tissues and cells are not responding to insulin. Pregnant women may develop so called gestational diabetes where certain hormones cause insulin resistance. Gestational diabetes usually disappears once a baby is born. Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes require treatment.

It all sounds pretty simple, but it's not. Even after proper diagnosis, diabetes symptoms and diabetes treatment greatly vary from person to person. With Type 1, insulin injections are almost always required, but dosage varies, and diet and lifestyle can make a big difference. Type 2 can often be managed with dietary changes, exercise and supplements but, again, it varies from person to person. The difference between controlling diabetes properly and letting it go unchecked can be the difference between a normal, healthy life and one with serious complications that can result in deteriorating and life-threatening conditions.

One thing that can help is being informed. And that doesn't mean just a half-hour consultation with your doctor although that, of course, is mandatory and the start of all treatment. My physician told me to do my own research and educate myself as much as I could. He said knowing about a disease and its various treatment options would allow me to determine what is right for me. He even gave me links to some information websites.

The problem with gathering diabetes information is not that there isn't enough, but that there is so much and in so many different places. That's why it makes sense to seek a website that specializes in diabetes and offers diabetes news, articles, a comprehensive diabetes information directory, and links to important resources. I found one that was easy to navigate and covered all aspects of diabetes, with a directory to over two dozen diabetes-related topics such as exercise, diets, drugs, symptoms, testing, treatments, prevention, blogs, forums and more. The site also contained a large number of original articles by diabetes experts or just people who have learned to live with diabetes and wanted to share their knowledge and experience.

There is a great deal of useful information on diabetes out there, but it doesn't help much if it is scattered all over the web or written in incomprehensible medical jargon. This is why a site dedicated to diabetes and diabetes resources of all kinds makes sense and should be on top of your browser bookmarks.
